Intro to Watercolors

Watercolor painting shouldn't be intimidating! Take the fear and uncertainty out of this magical and versatile medium with our online class for beginners.

Want to paint loose florals with watercolors, but have no idea where to start?

Maybe you’re not good at drawing… or maybe you’re a complete beginner… or maybe you’ve tried painting loose florals before and gotten frustrated because everyone else makes it look so easy.

If so, this class was made for you: the beginner ready to fill their pages with beautiful florals AND the more experienced painter who wants to practice “loosening up” with their brush.

In this online class, you’ll learn it all — how to select and mix colors, how to use your brush to create different leaf and petal shapes in single strokes, how to build a pleasing composition, and even how to do thumbnail sketches before you start painting your final piece.

When you’re finished, you’ll have a beautiful, frame-worthy piece of art that’s ready to hang on the wall or gift to a friend!

Utah-based artist Annie Mertlich is known for her muted color palettes and ethereal, flowing botanicals. Now she’s teaching YOU how to replicate this style to make your own art, gifts, and so much more!

MODULES 1-2: Introduction & Supplies

Annie shares example projects plus all the tools she uses to create her beautiful artwork. Learn about the palettes, brushes, paper, and paints you’ll need to complete this class.

MODULE 3: Leaf Construction

Learn the basic brushstrokes needed to create a variety of leaf shapes, from spiked leaves to clustered stems. Annie shares her simple method for mixing lots of different greens that look natural, her tricks for painting a leaf that looks like it’s folded over, and simple gestures that make your leaves and stems look believable.

MODULE 4: Petal Construction

From crescent moons to half-circles, in this module you’ll discover all the techniques and brushstrokes you need to break down a flower into its simplest form without getting overwhelmed by the details. Learn to paint roses, peonies, lilac, foxglove, and more.

MODULE 5: Composition & Sketching

Individual leaves and flowers are fun to paint, but learning to properly compose a work of art sets the pros apart from the beginners! Luckily there are simple, time-tested rules to follow. Learn how to make your elements dance across the page and how to test your composition ideas before diving into painting.

MODULE 6: The Final Piece

Combine everything you’ve learned into a final class project! Follow along as Annie walks you through the entire process from start-to-finish. You’ll paint a variety of leaves, flowers, and berries in a loose, romantic composition that you’ll be proud to hang on your wall or share with friends!
